Sheffield - Positive Action to Tackle Knife Crime
2017
Last weekend’s report of knives being used in attacks at a Sheffield venue regrettably is the latest example in a unwanted National trend.
In April the Office for National Statistics published key statistics for 2016 which showed a 14% increase in knife crimes across the UK (32,448 incidents) compared to 2015.
This an issue not just effecting Sheffield and is a challenge for Police forces and operators across the country.
The latest action to address this issue in Sheffield is the purchase by the Sheffield BID of 30 knife wands to assist premises with searching customers and to act as a visible deterrent to those who choose to carry knives in the city centre.
This resource is available to all premises, subject to availability, on a first come first served basis.
Sgt Burdett of South Yorkshire Police commented:
“Knife crime is a high priority for South Yorkshire Police and businesses alike and there is a proven track record of Operators in the city working in Partnership with the Police on a range of issues. As part of my role with the Sheffield BID we look to see how we can use its funds and resources to help the city tackle a range of issues including crime. The decision to support the late night economy with this equipment is a great example of how the BID can act quickly to positively improve the situation.”
